The art of
Jack Davis has been a fixture in
American publications and advertising
for more than sixty years. His distinctive
style of cartooning is immediately
recognizable to millions as "that
guy from Mad Magazine."
Before becoming
one of the original "usual
gang of idiots" at the groundbreaking
humor magazine, Jack's artwork had
earlier been one of the foundations
of EC Comics, the famous (and infamous)
prolific publisher of horror comics
that was at the epicenter of the
comic book scandals of the 1950s.
With Congressional hearings turning
a spotlight onto lurid and sensationalistic
comic books, Jack's career might
have been at an end. In fact, it
was only just beginning. Mad turned
out be a springboard for Jack into
magazine illustration and advertising
art.
Nowhere Productions'
forthcoming documentary examines
the work and impact of one of cartooning's
most beloved figures. Through interviews
with the artist and his colleagues,
the effect that Jack Davis has had
on generations of American and international
cartoonists will be seen with stunning
clarity.
